Fort Pierce

Fort Pierce, Florida, the St. Lucie County seat, is the county's center of business and commerce. As an educational, cultural and recreational center, the city has much to offer.

Once the county's largest city, Fort Pierce is acquiring a new look. Main Street projects underway are geared to revitalizing the downtown business district. They are improving the city's appearance and in the process are generating a great deal of enthusiasm about its future.

The restoration of the old city hall was a key to the redevelopment efforts. Restaurants are opening. Merchants thinking of signing on need look only to Stuart's example in Martin County to see the possibilities.

The traffic circle and landscaping in the project by the Fort Pierce City Marina have given a fresh new look to the waterfront area. A replacement library will be built overlooking the Indian River and nicely within walking distance of downtown Fort Pierce.

The Manatee Education and Observation Center opened last year to a responsive public eager to see the cherished gentle sea cows who visit from November to April. The center is within walking distance of downtown. too.

The harbor front downtown is always busy with visiting boaters. Landlubbers enjoy it too stopping for lunch or dinner at a waterfront restaurant with a view.

The city's location next to the Indian River Lagoon makes it a natural for marine research institutions such as Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution and the new Smithsonian Institution marine research station underway on Causeway Island. Both bring top marine scientists to the city.
